What’s your childhood dream?

Since I was a kid, I’ve always wondered how it feels like riding an airplane.

Born and lived in a family where life is not as luxurious, we never had a chance to ride a plane or travel overseas. As far as I can remember, the farthest we’ve gone (from Quezon province) was Baguio City and Nueva Vizcaya where my uncle and his family lives.

At around 5 or 6 years old, I asked my mother, “How can I ride an airplane? Or go other overseas”. “Only rich people can afford that,” she answered. Then that was the time where I always pray to God to make me rich – only because my child self really wants to ride that “flying car“. There goes my imagination, but it is possible, right?

I turned 18 and it is known in our culture that when a lady turns 18, there is a grand celebration, numerous guests, 18 roses, 18 candles.

But for me, all I ever wanted was to fly.

As a Youth For Christ member, it was timely that the biggest youth conference will be held at Kalibo, Aklan and guess what, the dates were close to my 18th freaking birthday! That was a win-win situation for me – I can attend and join the conference plus I can get close to the skies on my birthday!

Unfamiliar to me what an airport looks like in real life and how it feels like to ride a plane, I told my parents that I don’t want any grand 18th birthday celebration. Just please let me go to Kalibo. Though I was alone – my wish was granted. (Blog post about my first airplane experience here!)

We booked a ticket for one, I don’t know anything about flying and riding a plane, unaccompanied, I pushed it through. My only thought was that just to follow people going to Kalibo wherever they go. (Yea, that was the young, aggressive & impulsive Ella right there)

Just know how to ask. Just ask.

You know how to read, right? You will never be lost.

Those were the words from my parents before I left and went inside the airport. They know how I wanted this so badly and how nervous was I at the same time. And they also know that I can’t be stopped.

It still felt like a dream – sitting in an airplane and will be flying soon… My thoughts were already in the clouds, and I felt like heaven.

Since then, I thought: “It is something that I will always want to do – FLY.” That I was not meant to just sit down and stay within my comfort zone. My fear of the unknown was unlocked. There will still be fears and worries that will come my way though, but that trip was an eye opener for me that I don’t have to be afraid of the unknown. I know what I have always dreamed of and nothing can stop me from doing my best to achieve them. For some, it may sound like a petty dream, but this dream has changed my views about life and started to transform a scaredyyy cat into a fighting tiger.

Since then, a travel bug has always been inside me.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10

So stay curious. Stay fearless. Soon enough, it will get you places.

Why don’t you share something about your childhood dreams too? 🙂

Oh, and by the way, that was my first-ever-low-quality-airplane-window-shot up there!
